Sean Payton said he will call plays for Denver's offense starting Week 5 against the Chargers, ending Davis Webb's four-game run as play-caller. Through four weeks, Denver's run game ranks 29th in the league at 81 yards per game and the offense ranks 27th at 280 yards per game. Payton called Webb "a future head coach" while taking back play-calling control; Webb keeps a game-planning role.
Fantasy take
Payton calling plays shifts weekly game-plan authorship away from Webb, whose scripts produced wide week-to-week swings for Bo Nix — a -14.4 passing EPA outing against Kansas City, then +8.4 against Jacksonville two weeks later. Nix's season passing EPA still ranks 28th among qualifying quarterbacks with a -3.6 CPOE, so the pass-catcher mix (Sutton, Franklin, Mims, Waddle, Engram) and target distribution under Payton's call sheet are what to look at starting Week 5, more than any single number from the Webb stretch.
